What is Beasts of Bermuda?
In Beasts of Bermuda, you play as a prehistoric creature native to the mysterious islands of Bermuda: a tropical ecosystem absent from any human contact. With its proneness to storms, forest fires and shifting tides, Bermuda is an ever-changing ecosystem.
Choose from up to 18 available creatures, herbivore or carnivore, and battle your way through the severities of hunger, thirst, stress and predation, which constantly threaten your survival. Play whatever suits you best, whether it be a flying, swimming or running creature, and thrive the islands.

It is currently under development, and release December 21st 2018 as a primarily multiplayer server experience. Play it now!

What does Beasts of Bermuda offer?
Beasts of Bermuda offers the experience of playing in unique niches as an aquatic, flying, or terrestrial creature. Certain creatures specialise in unique gameplay. For instance, piscivores offer a different lifestyle to traditional carnivores as they are both adept at swimming and running.

It also offers unique map elements. Whether you're seeking a cave for shelter from a storm, waiting for the tide to drop in order to walk across to a new island, or migrating to avoid a forest fire or depleted watering hole, the map is always changing and the world is alive.

The playable creatures in Beasts of Bermuda all have their own unique abilities. Some can grab, others can pounce. Some can even climb up walls. Large carnivores can sniff for prey, and herbivores have special bonuses for herding together. Every animal is different in Beasts of Bermuda, and a lot of effort has been put into making them fun mechanics to enjoy.

Comfort is a unique mechanic to Beasts of Bermuda. Comfort determines how healthy your creature is. At its highest peak, a creature can grow well and healthy. At low comfort, however, a creature becomes stressed and may die. Stress can be caused (but is not limited to) by standing near too many carnivores, exposure to a harsh storm or losing too much health.

Beasts of Bermuda also gives players free choice of how they want to look. Skins are completely customisable, allowing the player a free range of colour choices, whether it be for camouflage or dazzle. Additionally, the talent mechanic lets a creature level-up and spend points into different kinds of play styles, such as extra health or speed.

Breeding is also available; offspring will be mixtures of their parent's corresponding skins and colors as well as occasionally sporting leucistic or melanistic traits.

Many different challenges are always present on the islands of Bermuda that threaten survival. One must find food and quench their Thirst in the ever changing environment. Different animals the player can choose from having different means of obtaining food. Some are carnivores, needing to hunt and eat other players to survive. Other creatures are herbivores, and thus have a more peaceful means of eating. Piscivores are a mix, being capable of eating other players, or eating fish for survival. Along with the necessities from day to day survival, mother nature is always at your heels with unpredictable Weather, keeping the game interesting and entertaining to play.

Current Gamemodes

* Free Roam - In this mode, the player can select any creature to play as without cost or punishment for death. In this mode, the objective is what you make of it. There are many different objectives players frequently take on, be it achieving a high score, taking down others in combat, exploring the map, or herding up and socializing. This mode offers a relaxed atmosphere in which the player can do as they wish. We've been discussing additional game modes due to interest and feedback among our community, and we have a few ideas we would like to implement.

* Life-cycle - Gamemode in which the player starts as a juvenile of any species they wish and continues to grow, becoming more powerful over time in a multiplayer environment. Gradual ontogeny is also a feature under this category that adds to the realism aspect of growing from a juvenile to an adult; eventually, accompanying model changes differentiating younger members of different species from their older counterparts. This mode is coupled with a talent or skillpoint-based system, in which the player becomes more powerful in ways they can choose.

* Combat-based system - A player must successfully hunt and kill other players in order to gain points. Here, risk vs reward will very much be a factor as the larger the foe you down, the more reward you will gain.

Regardless of the selected mode of play settings may differ from server to server based upon their owner's preferences.

Where is Beasts of Bermuda in its development?
Beasts of Bermuda began development on January 16th, 2017. Currently, the game offers a fully functional game world with many combat mechanics and map-based survival elements already in place. Make no mistake, our game is still pre-release and is still very much under development. Future development will likely focus on expanding our playable creature roster, improving the quality of our graphics, models, and general assets, and then implementing additional game modes beyond Free Roam.

The development team has recently announced on their steam page that Beasts of Bermuda will be releasing on December 21st, 2018. Also within their steam page, is their patch notes where you can read in detail what new mechanics have been implemented. The best way, however, to keep up with development is to join their discord here: https://discord.gg/KZKzGTT where you can ask the Devs in the appropriate channels about the current build of the game.

What creatures are planned to be playable?
* Allosaurus (Not Playable)
* Apatosaurus
* Elasmosaurus

The following creatures have been confirmed to be added to Beasts of Bermuda but do not have a model yet. They will be added some time after EA release.

* Rubeosaurus
* Tropeognathus

It is likely the following creatures will be playable due to our interest in expanding the niches available to players in Beasts of Bermuda. Many of these animals are selected due to their unique niches or ability to utilize certain gameplay mechanics. Many are piscivores, aquatics, flying creatures, or semiaquatic animals.
Why does Beasts of Bermuda need Donations?
Beasts of Bermuda needs funds to commission and contract professionals for services related to modeling, animating, sound creation, skin design, level design, and just overall improvements. Up to this point, the game has been created by Predatoria and Vipe, two indie developers focused on the coding behind the game, with freelance contribution from several contributors. Most of our current models are from asset stores and we want to replace them with professional models. To bring our game to the next level of quality, we need to network with professionals in all departments of game design rather than just indefinitely coding more mechanics into the game, which requires funding neither of us can afford to do.

Want to help donate? Here's the link to the GoFundMe:

https://www.gofundme.com/beasts-of-bermuda

If you'd liked to help out by using PayPal, which is preferred since there's less of a pay cut, here's the email address to send it to:

mdweiss@ncsu.edu

There are also a rank of donators. These ranks are reached when some people make a certain amount to their donations.

FAQ
* What platforms will Beasts of Bermuda be available on?

Currently, Beasts of Bermuda only has Windows support as adding support for other operating systems is low on our priority list. In the future, MAC and Linux support will be added as well. Steam will be our method of distribution. Beasts of Bermuda is a PC game and will not function on consoles.

* When will Beasts of Bermuda be officially released from Early Access?

As of right now there is no current confirmation, as it has just entered its Early Access phase.

* Will Beasts of Bermuda have singleplayer support, or will it strictly be a multiplayer game?

Beasts of Bermuda is being created as a multiplayer game. If a player wishes to do so, they can host a server and play alone, but multiplayer play is strongly encouraged.

See Dedicated Servers
* Will there be Steam achievements?

Achievements will be available in-game upon release

* How much will Beasts of Bermuda Cost?

Beasts of Bermuda will very likely cost $20.00 (USD) and will be purchased on Steam.

* How can I keep up with Beasts of Bermuda's development?
Overview
The Pteranodon is a playable flying creature in Beasts of Bermuda. It is the fastest and most mobile creature in the game, able to soar through the skies at incredible speeds. This lets it able to access areas no other creature can reach, such as isolated landmasses and high mountains. Some mountains even provide it perfect shelter against storms!

As for its diet, the Pteranodon is piscivorous. It will regularly plunge into the ocean to catch fish - but it's not limited to eating just fish. It can become a scavenger, feasting on decaying meat if enough Scavenger points are put into its Ability Tree, as well as being able to kill other creatures by launching a deadly aerial assault from the sky - or even by grabbing and dropping them! With its greatly adjustable diet, ability to fly and fast growth time, the Pteranodon has a high chance of successfully reaching its adult stage... provided it doesn't crash into anything!

_________________________________________________________

Abilities
*Primary Attack: A fast bite. The damage is based on how fast the Pteranodon is moving, with higher speeds totaling more bite damage, and slower speeds dealing very weak damage.

*Secondary Attack: Has identical damage values to the Primary Attack, except it makes the Pteranodon bite downwards instead of forwards.

*Special Ability - Baby Snatcher: The Pteranodon must unlock this talent in order to utilize it. Once unlocked, it will be able to grab smaller creatures by holding the ability key next to them. As the victim is held, Ability power will slowly deplete (meaning you cannot hold them forever), and you are not able to attack the grabbed victim. However, you can let them go while flying and cause them to fall to their death.

Unique Attribute: The Pteranodon can use the scent key to briefly highlight all nearby fish, making them much easier to spot.

_________________________________________________________

Weakness
If the Pteranodon crashes into the ground, it will receive massive injury. Most of the time, it will die from such a fall. However, if miraculously alive, it is still susceptible to being found and preyed upon by carnivores who have detected its scent.

The Pteranodon is also incredibly sensitive to harsh weather due to its very poor weather resistance stat. Not even Ability Tree investments in Weather Resistance will completely solve this problem. It is forced to take refuge from even mild storms.

Lastly, an aquatic predator can quickly snatch a Pteranodon while it is fishing. While this doesn't often happen, it doesn't mean it wont happen.
_________________________________________________________

Additional Notes
* The Pteranodon's flight mechanics were inspired by the Pteranodon of Primal Carnage: a combat game where humans and dinosaurs do battle.

* The Pteranodon's current model is not scientifically accurate. Its feet are misaligned and its walking posture is slouched. Unfortunately, this is because the model's rig is limited, forcing it to be animated the way it is now.

* The noises of the Pteranodon were made by modifying Emu sounds.

Beasts of Bermuda contains, currently, only one creature capable of flight. This is the Pteranodon. In the future, the roster will expand to include Tropeognathus. For a list of other likely and discussed flyer additions, please see this page.

Flying creatures are typically highly adept flyers but perform poorly when maneuvering on land.

Flying creatures have very poor weather resistance, and must be particularly wary of stormy weather.

Takeoff
In order to take off, a player must press the spacebar button. If the player is taking off in a location surrounded by obstructions such as rocks or trees, it is highly likely they will crash into these objects and end up back on the ground again. Takeoff takes 35 stamina, so it cannot be spammed too frequently.

Flight
The Pteranodon's flight was inspired greatly by the Primal Carnage Pteranodon due to its control and capability in a combat scenario.

As a player maneuvers and takes turns, the sharpness of these turns will increase to the point where they can twirl, or nearly hover in place. This mechanic was greatly inspired by the PC Pteranodon's capabilities to do just this. It allows a player to hover, or wait for the opportune strike moment.

As a player continues to dive, they will accumulate what is referred to as dive boost. Dive boost is a speed boost that becomes progressively greater the longer the player has been diving. This allows flyers to build up to significant speeds if they wish.

Speed dictates the rate at which a flyer can adjust their pitch angle. The faster a player is going, the more difficult it will be for them to adjust their pitch angle.

Speed dictates how much damage the Pteranodon will do with its peck attack. It will do a lot more damage if the player has gained significant amounts of dive boost.

The maximum angle at which a player can climb into the sky while flying is dictated by speed. The faster a player is going, the more vertical their ascent can be. A flyer who has gained a significant amount of dive boost will be capable of near vertical ascent, whereas one who is merely gliding will only be capable of meager ascent angles.

Sprinting while in the sky increases speed, allowing a greater ascent angle. The greater the ascent angle while going upwards, the more rapidly a flyer will consume stamina. Flyers use and regain stamina significantly faster than other animals.

Crashing
Flying creatures are often fragile. They take injury damage when hit by any source of damage, regardless of whether or not it hits the wing, head, legs, or torso. Hitting obstructions such as walls, cliffs, trees, and rocks while airborne will result in a crash, in which the player loses complete control of their flyer as it falls out of the sky. A crash will result in significant injury damage. The faster the player was going upon impact, the more severe the injury and damage accrued during the impact. The player will regain control of their flyer once it hits the ground and comes to rest. It is very easy to die by sufficiently hard impacts.

Landing
In order to land safely, the player must be traveling slow enough and close to the ground. The legs will come down like landing gear if it is safe to land. If they are going to fast or if the place in which they are trying to land is unsuitable for a landing, they will crash instead, taking injury damage or potentially dying. Unsuitable locations are any location in which the slope of the terrain or object is too steep. Trying to land on a nearly vertical cliff face will result in a crash, for example.

The following creatures have been confirmed for Beasts of Bermuda and have a model. Most are currently playable. Any on this list that are currently not playable will be in the future.

* Acrocanthosaurus
* Apatosaurus
* Elasmosaurus
* Ichthyovenator
* Kronosaurus
* Lurdusaurus
* Megalosaurus
* Mosasaurus
* Oryctodromeus (Not playable)
* Pachycephalosaurus (Not playable)
* Parasaurolophus
* Pteranodon
* Saichania (Not playable)
* Tyrannosaurus rex
* Utahraptor (Not playable)
* Velociraptor

The following creatures have been confirmed to be added to Beasts of Bermuda but do not have a model yet. They will be added some time after EA release.

* Rubeosaurus
* Tropeognathus

Discussed creatures are animals that have been discussed to be added, but have not been confirmed and are less likely to be added. The developers hope to have at least two creatures of every type to the game. With the proper resources, some of these creatures may be added.

Where the words (one of) appear, only one creature of that group will be added.

Not much is know yet about this animal in terms of function in Beasts of Bermuda. However, the following developer quote has been said about the animal.

As the largest and most powerful of the fish eating Pterosaurs in Beasts of Bermuda, Tropeognathus is able to use its huge wingspan to stay airborne for long periods of time, even during all but the harshest of storms. Its large wings also allow it to be a very effective swimmer and can repel and even injure other fliers who come too close, but this size comes at a cost; it requires a large amount of stamina to take off, especially from the water, and is slow and ungainly on the land. As a piscivore, it is unsuited to combat and inflicts very little damage. Tropeognathus also benefits from being in a mated pair much like an albatross or bald eagle, gaining a mild boost to a few important stats when in proximity. It will be the 'king of the skies'.

Model is WIP for this creature, and cannot be shown at this time.

Given the theme and lore of Beasts of Bermuda, most maps come with an ocean. This ocean is salty, meaning a player will not be able to quench their thirst if they attempt to drink from this body of water. Drinking from the Ocean will cause the player to lose survival points. The ocean has tides and often harbors both playable aquatic creatures and edible fish for piscivores. Terrestrial creatures who enter the ocean will see a significant drop in their comfort, often resulting in gradual loss of health.

The ocean and other bodies of water come with two different sets of post-processing effects, depending on whether the player is playing as an aquatic creature. Aquatic creatures sport significantly improved underwater visibility over their terrestrial counterparts due to reduction in underwater fog thickness and lack of water blurriness.

The ocean is the only body of water in the game that has tides. The water level will rise and fall in a cyclic motion on an hourly clock, often revealing or covering certain portions of the map key for terrestrial creature travel. Many caves and temples have entrances that may be submerged under the surface of the Ocean part or all of the time, depending on the tides. These areas often pose a point where aquatic and terrestrial creatures may come into contact with each other. Some cave passages may be submerged by the Ocean during all times except low tide, deliberately hiding certain secret areas of the map for the majority of the tidal cycle.

The ocean is also influenced by storms, where storm surges can occur during particularly strong storms. These storm surges can be very severe, occasionally flooding significant portions of the entire map and posing a survival challenge for players.

Beaching is a mechanic that all aquatic creatures suffer from. It causes the creature to become incredibly weakened when on land. While beached, turning speed and movement speed are drastically hindered, and comfort decreases at a rapid rate. Beaching generally results in death by comfort loss. Beached creatures are also easy prey for terrestrial predators.

Its very easy to become beached, and very difficult to get back into the water. It is recommended for all aquatic creatures to stay away from shallow shorelines to avoid risk of beaching themselves.

Multiple water and map mechanics make beaching hard to avoid. Some of these include receding tides, dropping water levels after a recent storm, or perhaps a nastily thirsty Apatosaurus who decided to drink your lake dry.

However, there are some talents in the Talent tree that reduce the harshness received from beaching. The talent Beachgoer increases the speed and turn radius of a beached creature, while the talent Sunbather relieves much of the comfort loss experienced when beached.

With 3 points in Sunbather, an aquatic creature can regenerate comfort while beached after a few seconds.

Overview
The Elasmosaurus is a playable aquatic creature in Beasts of Bermuda. Though it does not possess the high health and damage of the Mosasaurus or the Kronosaurus, it is the fastest swimmer in the game.

It is piscivorous, meaning specializes at eating fish. It can echolocate to reveal their location, as well as snatch them up with ease due to its very high attack range.

But it can always choose to follow a much more aggressive playstyle. It has the ability to choke and drown its opponents in a similarly gruesome fashion to the Mosasaurus, as well being gifted with a surprisingly versatile Talent Tree, which allows it to access many incredible abilities such as invisibility, extreme jumping distance and even partial immunity to beaching, allowing it a flexible gameplay full of surprises.

_________________________________________________________

Pros and Cons
Pros:

+ Very flexible Talent Tree

+ Grows fast

+ Superb attack range and precision

+ Can echolocate for fish

+ Decent fighter

+ High Speed

Cons:

- Has naturally low base health and damage

- Can die from beaching

_________________________________________________________

Abilities
Unique Signature Attribute: The Elasmosaurus has an automatic aiming system, so it will always strike its targets when they are within its attack radius.

*Primary Attack: A quick bite, on par with raptors and other small creatures.

*Secondary Attack: A long-range dash that causes the Elasmosaurus to briefly rocket forwards at incredible speeds, which can be used jump out of the water (though caution is advised doing this near beaches as the Elasmosaurus might hit the ground and become beached). This is very similar to the Mosasaurus' secondary attack.

*Special Ability: Upon activating, the Elasmosaurus snatches up a creature within its attack range. The Elasmosaurus can only pick up creatures smaller than it. Pressing the primary attack button while holding a creature will cause the Elasmosaurus to thrash its victim around, dealing damage. The Elasmosaurus can continue thrashing for as long as it has ability power, which will consistently decrease as the victim is held. Creatures such as the Velociraptor are small enough to be swallowed whole by executing its secondary attack.

Unique Attribute: The Elasmosaurus can echolocate by using its short call (Default button is 2). It will highlight all nearby fish, making them much easier to spot.

_________________________________________________________

Weakness
The Elasmosaurus is rather fragile, having relatively low HP for its size. It also starts the game as a very vulnerable creature, and like all aquatic creatures, it can die from beaching itself.

The Elasmosaurus is also susceptible to being preyed upon by the Mosasaurus and the Kronosaurus. However, The Elasmosaurus is faster and has more stamina than the two, allowing it to dodge their attacks and, if needed, defend itself by retaliating back. Nonetheless, the Elasmosaurus is better off escaping, as one bite from a large predator can be an immediate death sentence for it.

_________________________________________________________

Additional Notes
* It is currently the only creature that as an auto-aim mechanic.

* Creating the Elasmosaurus and transforming it into a practical creature for gameplay was an extremely difficult endeavor, mostly due to the programming for its neck.

NOTE: THE ELASMOSAURUS'S GRAB ATTACK IS NOT AVAILABLE YET.

Creatures such as the Velociraptor are small enough to be swallowed whole by executing its secondary attack.

Unique Attribute: The Elasmosaurus can echolocate by using its short call (Default button is 2). It will highlight all nearby fish, making them much easier to spot.
