What are Talents?

Talents in Beasts of Bermuda are optional enhancements that can be applied to a player's creature. Each talent gives unique perks to a creature, whether it be something like extra damage or increased tolerance to severe weather.

Many talents are simple in nature, increasing values such as ability power or oxygen by set amounts. However, some talents enable abilities previously inaccessible to a certain creature, such as being able to reduce an opponent's stamina with a standard bite attack. Because of this, a creature's functions and playstyle can be individually tailored to the player's liking.

Inherits are bonuses to existing talents. Whether spawned or nested, one has a chance to gain up to +2 on any talent available to the creature they have selected. One important thing to note, however, is that while a spawned creature's inherits are totally random, a nested creature may inherit any of the talents either of their parents put points into. A parent's inherits cannot be transferred to offspring.

All spawned creatures are guaranteed 2 positive inherits, but may also receive anywhere from 0 to 2 negative inherits and/or an additional 2 positive inherits. This brings the total to 6 (4 positive, 2 negative)(the optimal result would be 4 - all positive, no negatives). Although spawned creatures are confined to these limits, nested creatures have the chance for even more inherits. The Good Parent talent, if obtained by one or more parents, may boost the chances for their offspring to have additional positive inherits. Nested creatures only have the potential to earn negative inherits if they are the product of incest or their egg is damaged before being laid.

Types of Talents

Talents can be sorted into three major categories.

Power Talents

Power talents, in the talent screen, lie on the bottom left with the power tree. The color associated with these talents is red. Power talents increase the strength and battle capabilities of one's creature. Examples include a talent that increases a creature's maximum health capacity and a talent that (when maxed out) can apply injury damage with tail hits.

Speed Talents

Speed talents, in the talent screen, lie in the top center of the screen with the speed tree. The color associated with these talents is green. Speed talents increase a creature's mobility and maneuverability. Examples include a talent that increases a creature's base turn radius and a talent that makes it easier to go up slopes.

Survival Talents

Survival talents, in the talent screen, lie on the bottom left with the survival tree. The color associated with these talents is blue. Survival talents improve a creature's ability to survive and be efficient in its environment. Examples include a talent that improves resistance to severe weather and a talent that decreases the amount of water that the creature loses per tick.

In-betweeners

Some talents lie between trees in the talent screen. As such, they can be classed as both of the talent types they lie between. For instance, a talent between the power and speed trees could be classed as both a power and speed talent.
