Overview
Pteranodon (also known as Ptera, PT, Petra, or sometimes simply referred to as ‘bird’) is a playable pterosaur in Beasts of Bermuda. It is the most agile creatures in the game, able to soar and glide through the air at incredible speed. Its ability to fly allows it to access places that few creatures can reach, such as high-up rocks and cliffs, or isolated outcrops out at sea. Some of these locations provide perfect shelter from storms, which Pteranodon are quite vulnerable to!
Pteranodon has a piscivorous diet, and can be seen plunging into the water for fish from time to time. However, its diet is not restricted, and Pteranodon can also be frequently viewed hunting players and scavenging carcasses around the map.
It has many hunting methods, although the most common is dive-bombing. Dives require careful aim and precision to prevent crashing at high speeds, and being fast enough can make you into no more than a blur to your opponents; you become nearly impossible to hit!
Abilities
- Bite
- Default: LMB and RMB (Left and Right Mouse Button)
- A simple bite attack that can be angled forward and down with the usage of both mouse buttons.
- Dart
- Default: RMB (Right Mouse Button)
- A speed boost and attack ability that may only be used while submerged in water.
- This ability will propel you forward at great speeds, and can even be used to take off quickly from the water.
- Darting into another creature will deal damage to them.
- Flight
- Default: W + SHIFT + SPACE
- This ability is unique to the Flier class, and can be used by jumping, sprinting, and holding your W key at the same time.
- Taking off consumes stamina initially, and sprinting while flying will drain your stamina as well, but you can glide and dive freely without losing any energy as you go.
- Braking
- Default: Q
- Braking allows you to slow down mid-flight, to prevent crash-landings.
- To slow your flight, hold down your Interact keybind (default Q).
- You can hold the SPACE key to prevent altitude loss from braking.
Survival Tips
- Pteranodon is both swift and nimble, able to out-speed and outmaneuver many of its opponents. It has the tightest turn circle and the highest acceleration of the flying creatures, making it quite hard to catch in the air, greatly aiding in its escapes. Utilize this superior mobility by diving in swoops and arcs to evade enemies.
- Pteranodon is fragile, and is extremely vulnerable to injury damage. With too much injury it cannot fly, becoming slow and helpless on the ground. By investing in the talents Strong Legs and Strong Bones, you can mitigate injury from crash landings and players respectively.
- Pteranodon’s diet is primarily fish, although it can safely eat fresh meat as much as it pleases. It may receive food satiation from both player carcasses and fish, but must have invested in the Scavenger talent to receive satiation from non-player carcasses.
- The faster a Pteranodon is moving, the more damage it will deal to its enemies. With the Piercing Beak talent, it can further increase its damage at higher velocities.
- Pteranodons are one of only a handful of creatures that have the talent Baby Snatcher. This talent allows the player to grab and carry off young creatures of different species, provided they’re not too heavy to fly with! Carrying babies and juveniles will drain your Ability Power over time, meaning you can’t carry them forever.
- Pteras are weak to intense weather, even with the Weather Resistance talent. When a storm starts up, it’s best for them to seek shelter immediately. If you’re afraid of Pteranodons, but have good weather resistance, storms are the best time to be out and about while they keep comfortable in caves ‘til the storm passes!
Trivia
- Pteranodon’s in-game calls were created by using and modifying emu sounds.
- Pteranodon has had a total of 1 remodel, from the old store-bought asset by Mantis Hatchery, to its current model by Manuelsaurus.
- Pteranodon was the first creature to ever receive a Shimmer skin, the Phantom Shimmer Pteranodon. This shimmer was also the first and only event to have ever been a contest, unlike the participation events that followed.
- Pteras (and Tropeognathus) used to be incapable of dealing physical damage to Apatosaurus. This is because before 10/1/2017, they would hover around Apatosaurus’s head and neck hitbox, where the apato could not reach to defend itself. Now, after the 3/10/2022 Apato rework, it can defend itself and does not need the immunity.
- Pteranodon’s flight system is inspired by Primal Carnage.
