Locational Damage

Beasts of Bermuda features a relatively simple locational damage system, though it still takes some amount of understanding to fully master and adds an extra layer of challenge to combat.

Tail Hits

Tail hits occur when a player attacks and hits an opponent in the designated tail region (varies depending on creature). Unlike other types of locational damage, tail hits do not result in any amount of injury unless the attacker has 3 or more points in the bruiser talent. Tail hits also deal reduced damage to the victim if the attacker is larger. If damage notifications are enabled, the player will be specifically notified when they land a tail hit.

Leg Hits

Leg hits occur when a player attacks and hits an opponent in the designated leg regions of their opponent. Leg hits, unlike tail hits, deal full damage (depending on size, talents, etc. of both attacker and opponent) and slightly more injury damage than normal. Because of this, attacking around an opponent's torso region can give one the upper hand in combat, since the injury makes the opponent slower than normal. If damage notifications are enabled, the player will be specifically notified when they land a leg hit.

Head/Neck Hits

Head and neck hits occur when an attack lands in the head or neck region. While a victim will not suffer much injury from these types of blows, extra damage is applied in addition to the base amount, making the hits more potent than normal and potentially deadly. However, landing these hits is not easy, since most creatures have their greatest defenses at the front of their bodies. If damage notifications are enabled, the player will not be specifically notified when they land a head or neck hit.

Body Hits

Body hits do not deal anything extra from what the creature attacking has (in terms of stats). Normally, they are hard to accomplish instead of leg hits, because it is often the case that the two regions do not have much in terms of separation. If damage notifications are enabled, the player will not be specifically notified when they land a body hit.

Other Notes

There are many different circumstances where locational damage matters or does not. Below is a summarized list of all special cases that cause various forms of damage to behave different than expected.

  • The Exhausting Bite (stamina reduction from player attacked) talent is not affected by locational damage, and occurs on any type of hit.
  • The Apatosaurus will not cause knockback to another creature if it strikes the tail while using its tail whip attack. This is most notably an important aspect of Apatosaurus hunting by Acrocanthosaurus, as it was too punitive otherwise.
  • The Mosasaurus is only able to grab the Elasmosaurus if it initiates its grab attack near the torso of the Elasmosaurus, rather than on the neck or head.
  • The Mosasaurus is only able to grab creatures considered large prey if the attack doesn't grab the tail of its potential grab victim.
