Food is a resource that must be filled to avoid death due to starvation. Food, like thirst, is a resource that decays exponentially. This means that the more food the player has, the faster the food will decay. Given the many effects hunger has, it is definitely in a player's interest to keep their food high. This also allows a player to last on little food for a while before the full effects of starvation begin to happen. Once a player has 0 food, the creature they are playing as will begin rapidly losing HP. From 100%, most creatures can last 33 minutes without eating.
Most creatures in Beasts of Bermuda have 100 food, though there are a couple exceptions. Tyrannosaurus, Mosasaurus, and Kronosaurus all have 150 food. Apatosaurus has 200 food.
Satiation
All creatures in Beasts of Bermuda have a preferred diet: fish, plants, kelp, or meat. When you eat your preferred food source you gain satiation. This functions as a sort of secondary food bar that keeps your hunger at the same level until it depletes. If your creature is satiated, a blue-green shine will overlay your food bar. If you are fully satiated, your entire food bar will have this blue-green shine.
Sources of Food
Different creatures obtain food in different ways. There are three different means by which a player can obtain food, only some of which may be valid at any given period of time.
- Plants will grant food upon consumption for herbivores.
- Fish grant a significant amount of food and satiation if a creature has the piscivorous trait. Herbivores cannot consume fish at all. Most carnivores will struggle to catch any fish due to generally not being good swimming.
- Carnivores can eat carcasses in order to satisfy their food requirement. These drop from any creature when they die, and larger creatures will drop larger carcasses with more food. Carcasses also spawn around the map.
Effects of Hunger
- In life cycle mode, Food level is one of many components that affects a creature's growth rate. While below 50 food or water your grow will slow down, if it gets under 40 food or water you will receive "Paused Growth."
- If in need of recovering HP, one who is well fed will recover significantly faster than a player who is on the brink of starvation. Even if food value is not down to 0 yet, a combination of low food, thirst, and comfort will cause HP to decay rather than heal over time.
- Keeping yourself well-fed will increase the rate at which a player's stamina recharges by 15%, whereas being at or near a state of starvation will decrease a player's stamina recharge rate by 15%.
- Keeping yourself well-fed will increase the rate at which a player's ability power recharges by 15%, whereas being at or near a state of starvation will decrease a player's stamina recharge rate by 15%.
- Well-fed players will heal more rapidly from injuries.
Fat/Overweight Status
It is possible to exceed 100 food. In order to do so, a player must continue eating while they are full on food. However, if this is done they will become overweight. The maximum fill past the full point is 30%. Benefits of being overweight include:
- Increased health pool
- Increased healing rate
The drawbacks of being overweight include:
- Decreased speed
- Decreased stamina regeneration
- Decreased comfort
- Decreased turn rate
The talent Tough Stomach helps negate some of these debuffs, allowing players to build their talents around being fat.
